The Bournemouth Distinguished Gentleman’s ride in 2016 continued to hoist the colours for Prostate Cancer prevention and men’s mental health awareness? . After an incredible subscription leading up to the event we entered the day some 229 riders strong. We had to fend off the dregs of a pre-dawn shower that had dampened our anticipation, but we stood fast. With true gusto and in debonair dapper style, riders emerged through the glimmering puddles to converge on the Quayside at Poole.
With the sun beginning to ward off the grey gloomy morning, our DGR grace was again seeming to win over the day. A packed street of sharp suits and pressed pleats prepared themselves for the 2016 DGR Bournemouth. We would entertain the morning revellers with our rumbling machines and our Chaplin-esque charm. Spanning the entirety of Sandbanks Bay we looped the headland and across the cliff top coastline to Bournemouth Pier.
Warmly received at the re-group, our gaze fell to one another and the nostalgic machinery that had been nursed into life for the ride. Laverdas, Nortons and countless kick-start only classics resided amidst the bikes on display. After some refreshment and a generous helping of sea air it was once again time to mount up and move on. The march for men’s health continued through Boscombe and eastward along the coast towards Hengistbury Head. Waving and honking our horns we meandered through the busy Sunday streets and out into the suburbs of Bournemouth town.
As the road opened up to greet us the ride passed through the now sunny forest around Hurn. Dry tarmac and blue skies paved the path to the Avon Causeway where we would again re-group and take in the majesty of proceedings.
The final stint of our ride would prove to be the most formidable challenge. Bringing us about and returning to the now thriving activities of sunny Sunday Southbourne and our finale venue: the fitting surroundings of the Brew House and Kitchen. Traffic jams, roundabouts and back-to-back traffic lights would thwart our effort to negotiate the final segment of our gentlemanly adventure. Splitting up somewhat and doing our level best we converged at the summit of the 2016 DGR effort.
Raffles, music and Gentleman’s ale transformed the dynamic flow of the day into the static subtlety of the evening.
Gentleman unite, ride dapper and dress right, may the product of our efforts mean the end goal is in sight.
