I finally achieved my long-term goal of securing myself a 50s Matchless. This was in itself a long awaited challenge however the maiden voyage that followed exceeded what even I had been imaging for so long.
Upon invitation from my Father-in-law, I packed up my new purchase and headed up country to Shrewesbury where he took me on his local circuit over the horseshoe pass to the Ponderosa biker Café.
Expecting this to be a casual countryside pootle I had headed up there with total confidence. This soon dwindled when Mark told me that it was in fact a 30 mile round trip that would involve this already well-known and legendary mountain pass. Without so much as a hiccup the 63 year old single thumped out her authority an swallowed up the trip without complaint. I however was a different story.
Despite the impressive views and a proper Ponderosa breakfast, impending doom and gloom would engulf our homeward journey. Winding the power of the Matchless wind open in the pouring rain on brittle Avon tyres was never my intention. Soaked to the bone with white knuckles we made it back to base camp intact. Needless to say the ol gal had proven herself capable. the Ponderosa and the Horseshoe pass would however require a second sitting.
